That first trimester really just came and went, especially considering that the first month I didn’t even know I was pregnant! So here’s a little recap of how I felt before I forget...
You always hear the horror stories about the first trimester and how difficult it is physically, but so far I have felt great and feel so lucky for that! As soon as I knew I was pregnant, the first sign or symptom I felt was extreme exhaustion. I knew I had just come from a crazy busy week at girls camp, but as the weeks went on I’d still find myself falling asleep at my desk at work and not being able to keep me eyes open past 9 p.m. Lucky for me I haven’t thrown up once, but I did feel some nausea when on an empty stomach, like early in the mornings and in between meals during the 1st trimester. At the same time, my appetite surged so I was constantly snacking to satisfy my hunger and keep the nausea away. I've also been more sensitive to smells around me. Strong smells like the trash can or dirty dishes sitting in the sink for too long, really gross me out to the point of gagging! One time I started gagging packing Travis some chicken for lunch haha, so its really random what grosses me out. I can also smell things that no one else can like very subtle smells in the air and even tap water tastes different to me. Depending where it’s from and I can taste/ smell the chlorine and other minerals in it.My main food aversion has been red meat. I don’t know if it was because Travis had been smoking and eating a lot of brats lately, but I have just not been in the mood and have feel slightly grossed out by it. I occasionally have chicken and am more so in the mood for turkey, but it depends on the day and format of the meal, so I’ve been loosely eating vegetarian. And my only craving has been hot fudge sundae pop-tarts ;P
I haven’t seen much change in my body, the tiniest baby bump has started to emerge and is somewhere between a muffin top and a food-baby LOL. But it looks most pregnancy bump-like after a good meal. My pants no longer fit so I’ve resorted to some very affordable elastics that help expand the top button of my jeans to buy me sometime before I’m actually big enough for maternity jeans. Although my baby-bump is slow-growing, I’ve definitely felt the aches and pains of an ever-growing baby who, at 12 weeks, was the size of a lime! My lower back near the tailbone has felt a lot of pain, especially from when I bend over to clean and pick things up or from lying flat on my back. I used to go to yoga twice a week at my work gym and felt that I could do very advanced poses and loved challenging myself physically, but I’ve since had to take a step back and modify some of the poses because it’ll hurt my back or stretch out my stomach in an uncomfortable way (like when doing upward facing dog). I’m trying to keep active by continuing to take the stairs nearly everywhere I go at work and doing all other activities as I normally would like hiking, cleaning, and playing with chip at the park.
Overall though, the back pain being the worst of it so far, I’ve felt very fortunate to have had things so easy going and not have it effect my day-to-day life and work too much. It has also been such a relief to finally announce our pregnancy publicly. We were so over-joyed and it was such a hard secret to keep, especially from my parents & siblings! Plus, I was running out of clothes to wear to work that wouldn’t accentuate my tiny bump and give it away too soon, haha! I’m so grateful for all the happy reactions and all of the love and support we’ve received from extended family, co-workers & friends. This baby is already sooo loved by everyone around him/ her and I couldn’t be more grateful.
